- Task Three: Reflect on your Learning Journey [June Exam]
Health System Science 2 has been so different to what I expected. I expected to build upon the building blocks of health systems by going more in depth, however there is a history component, and the building blocks aren’t learned separately like in first year they are integrated together in every Core Domain lesson. The history component, especially the Term paper 2, really sparked my interest in HSS. Learning about how past policies and even pandemics affect health systems in the present day was fascinating. A few noteworthy moments for me are how universities and hospitals formed, why anatomy has become the center of medicine studies, how the Spanish flu influenced the decision to have a centralized health system in South Africa and why the HIV/AIDS epidemic was left unattended to until the early 2000s. Throughout Semester one we have learned content that falls under, Core, Cross-cutting, Complementary domains. While I can identify the link between the Core and Complementary domains, the present-day health system and history, I struggle to understand how the cross-cutting domain intersects with the other two domains. More specifically Module 1 where the cross-cutting domain was Teamwork, in Module 2 where it was Presentation Skills and Module 3 where it was Scholarship. Module 4 I tried and gave the best answer possible when prompted. As the year goes on I hope to gain some insight into this by discussing with my peers and maybe asking questions in class. Regarding assigned tasks I also ways make sure to stay up to date or at least try by not being more than two sessions (lectures) behind. Health System Sciences requires a large quantity of time so I make sure to not let it pile up otherwise it will be overwhelmingly difficult to complete when due dates come. This is mistake I learned from in first year and will not repeat. As I work through this course, I realize that I need to work on my writing skills, I have improved as I continue to implement the scholarship and research skill that I have learned. An area that needs addressing is analyzing, I tend to give information but not analyze and use it to support a claim. Module 2, although it’s a reflection illustrates this. I have improved a lot regarding group work. Since I did HSS 1 last year, I have something tangible to compare it to. This year I trust the capabilities of my group members and I’m more open to things not being done my way. There are activities where my approach was not the best and there are some that I contributed the most. I have also learned how to communicate in a clear and respectful way which does not cause conflict. Overall, I would say that my HSS experience is good. Apart from the minor issues that I mentioned above I will say that I am able to understand the coursework and I always put my best effort into the assignments. It has continued to build on the skills I acquired, which are on my About me page, which is what I expected or the most part. What I wrote in first year summaries my experience perfectly, HSS helps me become a more well-rounded person as a future health professional by teaching me time management, how to evaluate situations from a variety of perspectives, how to improve my academic writing, and how to accept the fact that building a good health system takes time.
